So Regionals didn’t go exactly as planned. We didn’t make it to states for the 4x8, however I’m still really happy with the team. We got a 5 second PR! And with that, we have definitely well qualified for nationals (emerging elite) and coach said he would “ponder” the idea of taking the team over the weekend.
My open 800 went really… bad. The time wasn’t terrible or anything, 2:24, but I’m still really disappointed in myself. I was really trying to break 2:20, or at least get a 2:22 like last weekend, but I went out way too fast and my legs cramped by the first 200. So overall, definitely not what I wanted my last individual high school race to be, but life goes on.
The 4x4 went extremely well! Going into it we knew our fastest time from this season was a 4:18, and we wanted to take a little bit of time off. Basically, we would have been happy with a 4:16, since it was almost 9 oclock at night, and we were all beat from running earlier that afternoon. We won our section, but didn’t have any idea of a time until we went over to talk to coach:
Coach: So what was it you were aiming for again?
Us: Around a 4:16-4:17. Something like that.
Coach (smiling): Well a 4:16 is great for yall…
Us: smiling and high fiving each other
Coach… BUT A 4:10 IS BETTER!
Us: looking at him in disbelief, and then proceeds to jump around like crazy people
It was a pretty good ending to my high school running career. I will say that I bawled my eyes out once I got home when it kinda hit me that it’s over. But I just think about next year and how I’ll still have running competitively part of my life.
ALSO: Bri, a freshman, MADE IT TO STATES. She kicked ass, she was ranked like 10th and only top 6 go to states. She was a good 5-10 meters behind the 6th place runner at the 100, and then she had the craziest kick I’ve ever seen, and beat her by .10 of a second. It was awesome and I’m really proud of her.
I’m so so so nervous. Which is weird for me because I usually don’t get that nervous anymore. We are ranked 4th in the 4x800 and top 3 go to states. The other team is about 5-7 seconds ahead, so we really gotta put in work to catch em.
Today’s practice was really good. We did some hand offs, shake out, 1/4 at race pace, strides, ice bath, and finally we had “race meditation” time. We dragged some of the cheerleading mats down the hall to coach’s room and turned off the lights and just lay there breathing and thinking about being relaxed and running strong tomorrow. I was practically asleep by the end of it, but it was a really cool little mental exercise. Now I’m off to bed to try it again myself.
… was great! I PR’d by two seconds in the open 800, 2:22.4, and came in 5th place! It was honestly the worst feeling in world running, but I’m so glad I pushed myself because I know I would have been really disappointed if I didn’t make it to regionals.
Lots of my teammates placed and are moving on to regionals. Two freshman Bri and Elizabeth, came in 2nd and 3rd place for the 3200, and both of them also qualified in the 1600. Coach said he thinks that’s the most points we’ve ever scored in the 3200 in a lonnnng time haha. Aaron pretty much came out of no where and took 2nd in the 800. Cody got 3rd in the 1600. Annnd my 4x4 team came in 2nd place :)
Also, Ezra won discus and got field athlete of the year, and Micah won the 110m hurdles, 300m hurdles, and got runner of the year. Plus Coach Bowen got Coach of the Year.
AND FINALLY, some of the best news, both the guys and girls teams scored 2nd for the overall outcome of the meet. (The guys beat Cosby by 1 point!!! We were all really excited about that hahaha).
This was one of the best meets ever, I’m so glad my last district meet was so great. Now moving on to regionals next week, and hopefully states and nationals… :) we’ll see.
It’s going to be very bittersweet. Good because I’m just so pumped for the 4x800 next week at regionals, and good because I really want to PR in the open 800 since I haven’t really been able to run it this year. But also pretty sad, since, ya know, it’s the last one :(
This whole season just went by so fast, I can’t believe it’s almost over.
